Award Amount

Award amounts vary each year based on the availability of funds and may be less than the maximum amount, and awards are dispersed each semester (Fall, Spring, Summer). The award amounts listed below are the maximum total annual award amounts.

  • LPN students: up to $3,000 per year
  • RN students: up to $7,500 per year
  • Master’s or doctoral nursing education students: up to $15,000 per year
  • LPN teaching certificate students: up to $1,000 per year

Student Eligibility

All students must be enrolled at least half-time in an accredited West Virginia nursing program and be in good academic standing at their academic institution. All students must also achieve both a cumulative and nursing GPA criterion set by the West Virginia Center for Nursing Recruitment and Retention Committee.  The gpa criteria changes annually after the application cycle closes..

LPN and RN students are eligible to receive an award only after they have completed at least one half of their nursing program.

Master’s or doctoral or nursing education students must be employed as an educator in an approved West Virginia school of nursing, be accepted in an approved West Virginia graduate nursing education program at the time of application, and must be continuously employed as a nursing educator in an approved West Virginia school of nursing while pursuing his or her master’s or doctoral degree.

LPN teaching certificate students must be accepted into a West Virginia LPN teaching certificate program and must be continuously employed as an LPN educator by an approved West Virginia LPN program while pursuing his or her certificate.

Award Repayment

A recipient who fails to provide verification that he or she is meeting the service obligation requirements is obligated to repay the principal and any interest that accrues on the award amount. Repayment of the award after failing to meet the program requirements begins within six months of graduating or after dropping below half-time status. Repayments must be completed within 10 years.

If you are late in submitting required employment verification, you may be sent a bill. If you do receive a bill but are completing the obligation, contact the WV Center for Nursing immediately to resolve the issue.
